Overview of GMAT?

Students who want to establish a dynamic career in business & management field, are sometimes required to appear for GMAT (graduate management admission test). GMAT has world wild acceptance and is conducted by GMAC (Graduate management admission council). More than 80% top B-school and the university asking for the GMAT score for pursuing MBA, Executive MBA, Finance and Management related courses. GMAC is a governing body of top business schools and universities in the globe and they conduct the GMAT across the 113 countries to get the best students in the management arena. In fact in India, IIMs are accepting GMAT for management and postgraduate courses. GMAT is a computer adaptive test, now the question comes in mind what does the computer adaptive means?

Computer Adaptive

Means – this is a computer adaptive test. That indicates computer will check your ability and learn your mind by giving you questions and how cleverly you give the answers! Now the question is how it works? While the student starts the examination, he or she can get the question from a verbal or quantitative section. Now if the student answers the first question correctly, the second question comes harder. But if the student is not giving the correct answer to the first question then the second question comes easier than the first one. In this way, examination proceeds and computer gives you score by collecting answers.you are not able to skip, delete, return or change questions, this process will going on until student complete the section.

Exam Pattern and Duration

There is four sections that are analytical writing assessment, integrated reasoning, quantitative reasoning and verbal reasoning. Students are asked to attend total 91 questions .the exam is scheduled for 3hours and 30 minutes. GMAC board does not standardise this examination with any subject or background. Any student who wants to pursue can apply for GMAT.

  • Analytical writing assessment– in this section students have to give the measurement of how critically they think. Student needs to answer only 1 question within 30 minutes.
  • Integrated reasoning– in this section student need to face measurement of ability in solving and analyse the data that comes in various forms like graphic interpretations, table analysis, multi-source reasoning. This section consists of 12 questions in 30 minutes duration.
  • Quantitative reasoning– it is a section of data sufficiency, problem-solving and reason-based questions. This section has 31 questions and time allotted is 62 minutes.
  • Verbal reasoning- this section is examining the standard of English. Reading comprehension, critical reasoning, and sentence correction are covered in this section. 36 questions which need to be answered within 65minutes.

A student can get a minimum of 200 and a maximum of 800 marks in this examination. There is a limited number that a person can appear for this test, therefore the student cannot attend the exam more than 5 times in a year. Also, a candidate can only attend this exam 8 times in his entire life.

Validation of Result

The GMAT result is valid for 5 years. After 5 years the student needs to sit for the exam again.

How to Book Exam

Students can book the exam both online and offline. For online, students need to create an account in GMAC website then fill all the details and pay the fees by debit or credit card. Besides this method, students can book the examination offline by calling GMAT customer care service or sending them an email.

Currently, the exam fee is $250, which comes approximately 17,782 Indian Rupees. there is an option to cancel or reschedule. If you want to reschedule the examination within 7 days before the test, you will get a refund of $80. For rescheduling the exam you need to pay $50 more so you can be able to choose your new preferred date for your test.
